Oakhurst dairy, located in Portland, ME has been working on becoming 'green' way before 'going green' was fashionable. (Oakhurst.com) Our own local dairy producers, who collect their milk from over 70 local farms, have converted to being green since 1992. Oakhurst is still working on decreasing their carbon footprint even more. Oakhurst's varies in its ways of being green, from being solar energy powered to CFC free refrigerants in their hybrid delivery trucks that use biodiesel that also have rerouting software that find more efficient delivery routes. As they say "At Oakhurst, we believe healthy products and a healthy planet go hand in hand. After all, our milk comes from local cows who eat, drink and breathe our local environment."(Oakhurst.com) Oakhurst has and still is doing a lot to help the environment.

Who ever though green milk would taste so good? I'm glad that more and more companies want to help the environment.
ReplyDeleteHow big is Oakhursts carbon footprint? And how much are they trying to reduce it by? I think they should be using more eco-friendly ways of transportation....like hybrid cars. I always see those big huge Oakhurts trucks that can't be good on gas.
ReplyDeleteOakhurst is doing a great job in leading the food industry in eco-business. I think more people should follow their lead and that way the technologies would become more affordable for smaller companies and parties.
ReplyDeleteI've seen this before on the news I think and I really like what Oakhurst does. It especially thinks of the well being of the animals. You usually see dairy farms enclosing cows in tight stalls which isn't cool at all. Although, Oakhurst let's the cows run around and be happy. I think happy cows come from Maine... and not California!
ReplyDeleteIt's pretty cool that Oakhurst, the natural goodness of Maine, is really taking part in eco friendly things. Its cool that all their trucks are using biodiesel.
ReplyDeleteThis is really interesting Ntina! I have a friend who is actually in charge of this manufacturing plant (Portland). He has worked at both Hood and Oakhurst. Oakhurst uses the most up to date technology (environmentally friendly) while Hood's machinery is very outdated.

I think it's great that Oakhurst is doing to much to be eco-friendly. More businesses like this should do more to be "green." Using solar powered refrigerants and biodiesel trucks with rerouting software is a great way to start!
ReplyDeleteI knew I liked Oakhurst for a reason. What other companies are going green?
ReplyDeleteI LOVE OAKHURST! Not only does their milk tastes great, but they really have a great company. I'm glad they take global planet climate change seriously. More companies should do this.
ReplyDeleteAre the "local dairy producers" trying to go green with the animals waste products? Since that is a great pollutant to water sources or are they just doing as most farms do and throwing it where they can?
ReplyDeleteI am totally impressed with them! I had no idea that they are already well into going green. They should deffinitly be a role model for other companies!
